Doug's Miracle

Douglas was raised in a Christian family, but he had gotten into a rock and roll band and was playing wherever. Vince, his friend, had also been introduced to Christianity, but had become very bitter. The band, Doug, Vince, and two others, had gone to a recording studio some distance away to cut a couple of promotional tapes. On the way home they were all involved in a head-on collision with a pickup truck.

I was home watching TV that evening when a state policeman called our home to tell us that Doug was in the hospital. When I asked how he was, the trooper said that he was not doing too good. Immediately I told my wife, and she said "He's going to be alright, in the name of Jesus!" She went straight to the hospital while I had to stay at home with our youngest son who was still in bed.

When she arrived at the hospital she was told by one of the doctors that Doug's leg had been broken and twisted grotesquely, and that it was possible that he could die from the injury. Again, she refused to accept that prognosis, in the name of Jesus, and they took him in for X-rays. Mama sat down and prayed while she waited.

Doug had to suffer an operation to put a steel rod into the bone in his leg. Then he was put into intensive care and more prayers were sent up. A few hours later, when he regained consciousness, we were able to find out what had happened. Doug's friend, Vince, had been killed and Doug had received the next worst injury in the crash. The doctor shared the results of the Xrays with my wife, and it showed that in addition to the broken leg, Doug had a crack in his spinal column. This worried the doctor, since, he said, it could result in nerve damage and the possibility of paralysis. More prayers.

A few days later Doug was sent home to recover, but the doctor was still very concerned about the crack in the spine, and warned about the amount and type of activity he was to be allowed. We kept the prayer chains going, and finally it was time for Doug's follow-up examination. There were more Xrays taken, and finally the doctor came into the room where Doug and Mama were waiting. He was pleased with the progress Doug's leg had made. Then he put the new Xray up beside the old, all the time talking about his worries about the severity and danger of the cracked spine. Then, for a long time there was silence as the doctor studied the two Xrays. After an unusually long silence the doctor shook his head, turned to Doug and his Mama and said, in a tone of wonder, "Well, it must have been one of the other boys".

To sum up the situation, the spinal crack was gone! No, it was not one of the other boys, it was Doug's spine that had been cracked. Except for Vince, who had died before reaching the hospital none of the others had suffered critical wounds. Besides, Mama was right there when the first Xray had been brought out. She knew whose it was. God had mended the spine, and the Xrays confirmed the fact. Another miracle from God had been received. Doug works hard on his present job, and he has no spinal trouble. Thank God!

In Jesus' Name,
AMEN
